About Battleships Logic Puzzles
Battleships (also known as "Solitaire Battleships", "Battleship Solitaire") is a logic puzzle played on a 10 x 10 grid. In this game, there are different ships: one big ship that takes up 4 squares, two medium ships that take up 3 squares each, three smaller ships that take up 2 squares each, and four tiny ships that take up 1 square each. Each ship is placed in a row or column, and no ship touches another, not even diagonally.
Numbers on the edges of the grid tell you how many squares in each row and column are filled with ships. Some squares might already show parts of ships or water as clues. The goal is to figure out where all the ships are located on the grid.
Basic Rules / How to Play
- Grid Size: The puzzle is typically played on a 10×10 grid but may vary in size.
- Ships: The fleet consists of several ships of different sizes:
- 1 Battleship (4 squares)
- 2 Cruisers (3 squares each)
- 3 Destroyers (2 squares each)
- 4 Submarines (1 square each)
- Ships' Placement Rules: Ships can be placed either horizontally or vertically but never diagonally. Ships do not touch each other, not even diagonally (they must have at least one empty square between them).
- Row and Column Clues: Numbers at the edges of the grid indicate how many ship parts (occupied squares) are present in that row or column.
- Water Cells: Some grids may have pre-filled water cells, indicating locations where ships cannot be placed.
Solving Tips and Techniques:
- Identifying Full Rows or Columns: If a row or column has a number equal to the grid's width (e.g., a "10" clue in a 10×10 puzzle), that entire row/column is filled with ship parts.
- Placing Submarines (1-Cell Ships): If a row or column contains a "1" and there is only one available spot, a submarine can be placed there. Since submarines don't touch other ships, mark the surrounding cells as water.
- Eliminating Impossible Placements: If a row or column has a "0," change all squares in that row or column to water. You cannot place a ship if it would touch another ship, even at the corners.
- Partial Ships and Pre-Filled Water Cells: If part of a ship is already visible, extend it in a way that makes sense. Make sure the ship doesn’t become too big or touch other ships. Water cells help show where ships can’t go and set clear boundaries.
- Completing Ship Shapes: If a part of a ship is placed and there is only one way it can grow, keep adding pieces in that direction until the whole ship is complete. Make sure the number of filled squares in each row and column matches the given hints.
- Counting Remaining Ships: Count how many ships of each type still need to be placed. If only one type of ship is left, find the only spot where it can fit.
The Battleships puzzle is a fun and tricky game where you use logic to find hidden ships on a grid. By thinking carefully and using smart strategies, you can solve even the hardest puzzles step by step.
